TMHC 7129 Saints or Devils Incarnate?Jesuits & Modernity (Summer: 3 )

Course Description

The Jesuits were involved in virtually every facet of early modern culture around the globe, and they left behind an extensive paper trail, much of it still unexamined. This seminar situates Jesuits in the traditional mode as agents of the Counter Reformation, of course, but more so in the new approaches that see them as cultural agents of Modernity on a massive scale in a variety of enterprises. This course is a seminar. Students will be expected to have background in the area they decide to explore for their final paper and to have the language skills it requires.
