JOUR 2245 Rock 'n' Roll Writing (Spring: 3 )

Course Description

Is "rock criticism" a contradiction in terms? Is it possible to think critically about a guitar solo by Jimi Hendrix or a lyric by Courtney Love? And is it better, in this field, to be an amateur than an expert? This class will explore the different styles and modes of engagement, from the poetic to the technical to the anti-literary, used by rock writers in books like Greil Marcus' Lipstick Traces, Ian MacDonald's Revolution In The Head, Patti Smith's Just Kids, Lester Bangs' Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung, and The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion and Rock 'n' Roll by Joy Press and Simon Reynolds. With these writers as our guides, the aim will be to encounter the music as directly and completely as possible, and then write up our discoveries.
