ENGL 7791 Exploring Avant-Gardes (Fall: 3 )

Course Description

This interdisciplinary course will track avant-garde practice in a selection of textual and visual works produced in the twentieth century. We will focus on two moments: the early decades of the historical avant-gardes (Futurism, Dada, Surrealism), and the resurgence of avant-garde transgressions in the aesthetics and politics of postmodernism. We will survey the debates between various theorists of the avant-garde (Burger, Poggioli, Benjamin, Adorno, Jameson), and study some exemplary manifestoes by avant-garde artists and writers (Marinetti, Tzara, Breton, Cixous, Haraway). Additional readings will include texts by and about Duchamp, Breton, Ernst, Carrington, Bellmer, Hoch, Stein, Wittig, Burroughs and others.
