ARTH 4426 Loot:Collecting Art in Italy (Fall: 3 )

Course Description

A study of the emergence of collections of antiquities and art in Italy from the classical period to the present, of foreigners taking the “Grand Tour” to buy works of art in Italy, of the display of Italian works of art, and of the ownership of works of art. Students will learn about the practice of researching works of art in a collection, selecting and installing them as evidence for a theme, and designing an exhibition. Course includes field trips to the MFA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Harvard Art Museums. This course fulfills the Renaissance/Baroque and 4000-level requirements for Art History Majors
