SPAN 6676 Navigating the Nation: Cityscapes and Countryside in Spanish literature and film of the 18th-21st Centuries (Spring: 3 )


Course Description

This course examines the portrayal of the Spanish city in conjunction or juxtaposed with the Spanish countryside in literature and film of the 18th-21st centuries, particularly as relates to the idea of forging a national identity. Topics to be explored include the concept of geographic determinism, the idea of a home-grown and country-bred Spanish identity, the dynamics of center versus periphery in the Spanish state, the processes of urban renewal and the development of the Spanish capital, and the social problems engendered by urbanization.
