SPAN 6639 Rethinking Realism: The Realist Novel in Nineteenth-Century Spain (Fall: 3 )


Course Description

This course undertakes a theoretical study of Realism as the prominent aesthetic movement in late nineteenth-century Spain. We will examine the novels of literary giants Pedro Antonio de Alarcn, Benito Prez Galds, Emilia Pardo Bazn, and Leopoldo Alas (Clarn), as well as subsequent renderings of these works in various media, from music to film. Students will consider the socio-historical context in which Realism flourished as they seek to understand its multiple forms, from costumbrismo to Naturalism and Spiritualism.
