JOUR 2244 Writing Outsider Lives (Fall: 3 )

Course Description

Voices from the margins - the social margins, the psychological margins - have a prophetic value. Where can we find such voices? How can we faithfully listen to them? And how useful are the conventions of journalism when we attempt to record their stories? This class will look at literature about the homeless - including Stuart: A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters, The Speakers by Heathcote Williams, Stories from the Shadows by Jim O'Connell, and Joe Gould's Teeth by Jill Lepore - and literature by the homeless, as students encounter the writers, and the process, behind The Pilgrim: a literary magazine produced by Boston's homeless community.
