JESU 7154 The History of American Jesuits (Summer: 3 )


Course Description

This course offers an introductory survey to the Society of Jesus's 475–year history with particular attention given to various Jesuit enterprises and enterprisers in America. It seeks to answer the question: What have been the characteristics of successful–and unsuccessful–Jesuit leadership? The course traces the Society's general origins, development, expansion, suppression, and restoration before examining the contributions of American Jesuits and Jesuit apostolates in such fields as education, theology, the arts, public affairs, and social justice.
