ENGL 7799 Nature,Culture,Wrtg:Derrida's of Grammatology/Cont (Fall: 3 )
Contemporary critical analyses of concepts such as gender, sexuality, and imperialism, often profess skepticism towards traditional norms and certainties and denounce "essentialism," "universalism," self and other, us and them polarities, to espouse a commitment to social change. This course aims to make precise the bases and implications of these gestures through a close reading of Derrida's Of Grammatology, the inaugural text of disciplinary revision. We shall also read related texts (Saussure, Rousseau, Levi Strauss, etc) in addition to classic deconstructive works in gender and race theory by critics such as Paul De Man, Barbara Johnson, Gayatri Spivak, and others.
