CLAS 3373 Euripides (Spring: 3 )

Course Description

A close reading of Euripides’ play Bakkhai in the original Greek. What happens when Dionysos appears on his own tragic stage? How is an Athenian audience to respond to such a god? How is a Theban king to recognize him? We will approach the text from the angles of genre, style, and language, as well as its contemporary contexts (political, social, religious, and literary).
